About VSN
The Voices for SEND Support Network (VSN) is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) families affected by autism. Specifically, VSN focuses on the Somali community in London and other regions of the UK. We started with the Somali community as a pilot project and expanded to all marginalized communities in London and the wider UK. The establishment of this network was prompted by a recognized gap in research and support services tailored to this demographic. Many families within these communities have limited awareness and understanding of autism, which is compounded by prevalent stigma. As a result, some families choose to keep their children with autism at home or pursue traditional healing methods and Islamic treatments instead of evidence-based interventions. VSN aims to bridge these gaps by providing culturally sensitive resources, education, and support to empower BAME families and promote inclusivity within the autism community.

Mission
The mission of The Voices for SEND Support Network (VSN) is to provide comprehensive support and resources to Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) families affected by autism, with a particular emphasis on addressing the needs of the Somali community in London and across the UK. We strive to empower these families by increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and fostering understanding of autism within their cultural context.
03.
Vision
Our vision at VSN is a society where every BAME family impacted by autism feels understood, supported, and equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to thrive. We envision a future where cultural barriers are overcome, and evidence-based interventions are accessible to all, ensuring that individuals with autism can reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives within their communities.
04.
Background
The need for VSN arose due to the limited research and resources available to BAME families impacted by autism. Many families within these communities faced significant barriers to accessing appropriate support and interventions, leading to a reliance on traditional healing practices and cultural remedies instead of evidence-based approaches. This gap in services often resulted in children with autism being kept at home or receiving inadequate support, exacerbating the challenges faced by both individuals and their families.
