Stigma Hurts More Than Autism

In Somali culture, we don’t always talk openly about disabilities—especially things like autism.

Parents fear what the community might say. Some are told, “Your child is just naughty,” or “He’s just quiet.”

But that stigma leads to silence—and silence leads to suffering. Many mums suffer in isolation, afraid to speak out.

Stigma doesn’t protect our children—it prevents them from thriving.

Let’s support, not shame. Let’s listen to parents, not judge them. Autism is nothing to be ashamed of—it’s time we say that loud and clear.
